Project Kuiper (now Amazon Leo): Amazon's 2021 case for satellite broadband
Amazon's own 8-minute film (December 2021, 171,000 views) on why it is building a LEO constellation: residents and small businesses in Cle Elum, Washington, describe life without broadband, and the Project Kuiper team explains the plan. Five years on, Kuiper is Amazon Leo, with 398 satellites launched and an enterprise beta.

Published by Amazon News on 15 December 2021 (8 minutes 6 seconds, about 171,000 views), this is Amazon's corporate case for Project Kuiper, told through Cle Elum, a small town in Washington State. Per the description, residents and small-business owners "share how their community is affected by limited broadband access" and members of the Kuiper team explain how a constellation in low Earth orbit would serve places like it. It is a polished, human-interest piece rather than a technical one, and it predates any Kuiper launch.
Why it matters for a business buyer
The film is useful precisely because it fixes the promise in time. What has happened since, as of 21 September 2026:
- Project Kuiper was renamed Amazon Leo in November 2025. Its first-generation constellation is licensed for 3,236 satellites; 398 had been launched by the 2 July 2026 Atlas V flight (396 production satellites plus two prototypes), and the FCC waived the July 2026 half-constellation milestone in June.
- An enterprise beta opened on 8 April 2026 with Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone, Vodacom, JetBlue, NBN Co, Vrio, NASA and others; on 8 September 2026 AT&T Business began selling Leo as a bundled third network layer with fibre and 5G. No consumer service and no monthly price have been announced.
- Launch capacity is the constraint: Vulcan and New Glenn were grounded through the summer, and Amazon ordered six more Ariane 64 flights on 9 September 2026.
The rural-broadband story in the video is the consumer market Starlink has served since 2021 (more than 6 million customers by mid-2025 according to SpaceX's Network Update). Amazon's actual first customers are enterprises and carriers, which is the subject of our September 2026 analysis.
