Overview
Elara Comunicaciones S.A.P.I. de C.V. is a Mexican satellite operator founded in 2004 and backed by the investment firm NorthGate Capital. It runs its own teleport in Tlalpan, in the south of Mexico City, which also hosts several of the country's carriers and connects to them by fibre, copper and microwave; Elara states 99.95% yearly availability for the teleport, with fully redundant critical infrastructure.
Its satellite links use Ku, Ka and C band for businesses and government bodies. Primary links connect head offices with remote branches, oil platforms and vessels. Backup links switch over automatically when a fibre, copper, microwave or satellite primary line fails. Quick-start links give carriers and projects temporary connectivity with no fixed term while the permanent line is built. Multicast and live streaming carry content to many sites at once.
Elara also sells network monitoring and management, link bonding with automatic failover, and "smart" solutions for ATM networks, precision agriculture and the remote management of telecom infrastructure. It says more than 70 field crews of certified installers work for it. The SCT transport and communications ministry selected Elara for the south-east region of its 10K rural connectivity programme, with an initial order of 2,717 sites.
