Overview
Hughes de Colombia S.A.S. is the Colombian subsidiary of Hughes Network Systems (EchoStar), with its office in Bogotá. It launched HughesNet geostationary satellite internet in Colombia in 2017 for consumers and businesses, initially covering about 75% of the population, and sells VSAT networks to enterprises and to carriers.
HughesNet is a Ka-band GEO service: a dish and a satellite modem at the customer site, with data allowances per plan. A 2026 document on satellite services in Colombia presented to the ITU puts its typical speeds at about 20 Mbps down and 2 to 3 Mbps up, against about 100 Mbps down for Starlink, which is why many buyers now compare the two.
