About this directory
Japan's satellite market is led by its telecom operators. Mobile networks reach almost the whole population but, according to KDDI, only about 60% of the land area, because of mountains and islands. Satellite fills the rest: backhaul for remote base stations, ships, construction sites, and above all disaster recovery when an earthquake or a typhoon takes down terrestrial networks.
Operators and Starlink resellers
KDDI has been Starlink's integrator since the October 2022 launch and runs au Starlink Direct, the first direct-to-cell service in Japan (April 2025). SoftBank resells both Starlink and OneWeb. NTT Docomo sells Starlink Business through NTT Communications. IIJ resells Starlink Business as a managed service tied into corporate VPNs, and its subsidiary IIJ Engineering handles network operations and field work. SKY Perfect JSAT, Asia's largest geostationary satellite operator, is also an authorized Starlink reseller, so it can offer both orbits.
Maritime and GEO services
JSAT Mobile Communications provides Inmarsat services and satellite phones for vessels and land sites. GEO and L-band services remain the reference where a ship or an emergency team needs a contracted, global service with voice; Starlink adds capacity and low latency.
Space infrastructure and IoT
Two companies serve a different customer. Infostellar sells ground-station time to satellite operators through its StellarStation platform. SORACOM provides IoT connectivity in over 180 countries, with satellite options for devices outside cellular coverage. NTT DATA is an IT services group rather than a connectivity provider.
Prices, resellers and disaster use are on the Starlink in Japan page.
