What is a satellite system integrator?
A satellite system integrator (SI) assembles complete communication solutions by combining satellite capacity from operators, ground equipment from terminal manufacturers, network management systems, and application software from multiple vendors into a coherent, end-to-end solution for a customer. System integrators translate the satellite operator's raw capacity into usable, managed connectivity services — they are the IT integrators of the satellite world.
Value proposition
System integrators serve customers who need a complete solution but lack the expertise to procure, configure, and operate multiple separate components. A defence ministry buying satellite communications doesn't want to separately procure space segment from Eutelsat, modems from iDirect, antennas from L3Harris, and network management from a software vendor — the system integrator bundles these with installation, maintenance, and 24/7 NOC monitoring into a single service contract. This simplicity commands a margin premium over component-level purchasing.
Major SI players
The satellite system integration market includes: Satcom Direct (aviation focus), Speedcast and Marlink (maritime and energy focus), Telespazio and ViaSat government (government/defence), Intelsat Government Solutions, and regional integrators like Arabsat, Hellas Sat, and AsiaSat. Many SI firms operate their own NOCs and maintain field engineering teams for installation and maintenance globally. The consolidation trend in the satellite industry is also affecting SIs: Speedcast acquired numerous regional SIs through 2017–2019, Marlink merged with Globe Wireless, and Intelsat acquired Glensat and other SIs to capture more value in the distribution chain.
