What is Software-Defined Satellite (SDS)?

A satellite whose payload functions — beam patterns, frequency allocations, power distribution, and modulation schemes — can be reconfigured in-orbit via software upload, allowing operators to adapt to changing demand without launching a new spacecraft.

What is a software-defined satellite?

A software-defined satellite (SDS) replaces fixed, hardware-wired payload functions with reprogrammable digital signal processors and flexible radio frequency front-ends. Instead of committing to a fixed beam pattern and frequency plan at manufacturing time, operators can upload new configurations in-orbit to redirect capacity, change modulation schemes, or enable new services years after launch.

The business case

A traditional GEO satellite is optimised for predicted demand at launch — with a 15-year lifetime and 3-year manufacturing lead time, demand forecasts are often wrong by the time the satellite is in service. An SDS allows operators to reallocate capacity from over-served to under-served regions, shift frequency bands, or even change the air interface standard. Intelsat 37e (2017) and Inmarsat Inmarsat-6 (2023) series are examples of large SDS platforms.

Key enabling technologies

Software-defined radio (SDR) chipsets, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and digital beamforming processors enable onboard signal processing flexibility. Advanced FPGAs can be reconfigured in orbit by uploading new bitstream files, changing their logical behaviour. Ground-based signal processing offloads further computation, enabling a split-processing architecture where only latency-sensitive operations happen on the satellite.

Industry direction

The SDS concept is becoming the baseline for new GEO communications satellites. Eutelsat Konnect, SES O3b mPOWER, and Viasat-3 all incorporate varying degrees of in-orbit reconfigurability. In the LEO domain, Starlink Gen2's digital payload enables dynamic beam steering and capacity allocation across its constellation.
